The EQUIP programme works to improve pre-service training for basic education teachers in Sudan by supporting the Ministries of Education and Higher Education.

Sudan is experiencing a major democratic transition, with an estimated 40% of the population aged under 14, while being the third largest country in Africa.

In addition to the poor access to education, the quality of teaching is inadequate with only 38% of Sudanese teachers qualified (basic and secondary education).

The pre-service teacher training programmes, which are dispensed in faculties of education, give priority to theory and academic knowledge. But they do not allow future teachers to acquire the practical and pedagogical skills required to provide high quality education.

In response to this alarming context, the European Union has launched the Education Quality Improvement Programme in Sudan (EQUIP).
