Combating gender-based violence: a development issue

What is the real state of sexual and gender-based violence in the world today? How can legal institutions, public policies and international cooperation frameworks respond effectively? And how is the persistence of this violence hindering the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?
Combating Gender-based Violence : Panorama
Described as a ‘silent pandemic’ by many international organisations, the issue of gender-based violence is now better documented, but is still too often underestimated. For more than two decades, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November has mobilised feminist and institutional voices on every continent. In recent years, awareness of this issue has accelerated, fuelled by the #MeToo movement, the explosion in reports during health confinements and armed conflicts, where women's bodies are often targeted as battlefields.
This mobilisation has forced governments, international organisations and local authorities to become more involved, but inequalities in access to justice, shortcomings in protection systems and societal resistance remain strong. To respond to the emergency, we need to combine our approaches: reliable statistical data, strengthening of the legal arsenal, awareness-raising among public players, and support for civil society initiatives.
This latest edition of the Rendez-vous de l'Expertise brought together specialists and practitioners from different geographical contexts to examine the progress made, share practical initiatives and reflect on the contribution that international cooperation can make to the fight against gender-based violence, as an essential condition for truly sustainable development.
What is a #RDVExpertise?
Les Rendez-vous de l'Expertise is a series of conference-debates based on a format inspired by TV programmes. Each session tackles a major issue in international cooperation through two round tables featuring international experts and practitioners. These discussions - held face-to-face or in duplex from different priority geographical areas - highlight the diversity of the players in the sector. Through direct dialogue, the speakers share their analyses, field experiences and perspectives on contemporary challenges.
