When
-
In the run-up to the 3rd United Nations Ocean Summit (UNOC3) in Nice in June 2025, this Rendez-vous de l'Expertise highlighted the local and regional initiatives that are making the islands of the Indian Ocean real showcases for the challenges of insularity in the face of ocean issues. This event provided a unique opportunity to explore how these territories can work together to meet these challenges, by focusing on regional cooperation and the adoption of innovative solutions specifically adapted to their island context.
Dialogue with Jérémie Pellet, CEO of Expertise France
The programme:
-
An overview of the main ocean issues facing Mauritius and other small island states, including coastal erosion, increasing pressure on marine resources, plastic pollution and the impacts of climate change.
-
Concrete initiatives at local and regional level, such as the network of Marine Protected Areas supported by the Varuna project, the fight against marine litter supported by the IORA, and enhanced security cooperation through the CRIMARIO initiative.
-
A strategic reflection on the role of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) on the international agenda, with proposals for the UNOC3: these States are key players in negotiations on ocean governance, particularly in terms of sustainable management of natural resources and access to appropriate funding.

What is a #RDVExpertise?
Les Rendez-vous de l'Expertise is a series of conference-debates based on a format inspired by TV programmes. Each session tackles a major issue in international cooperation through two round tables featuring international experts and practitioners. These discussions - held face-to-face or in duplex from different priority geographical areas - highlight the diversity of the players in the sector. Through direct dialogue, the speakers share their analyses, field experiences and perspectives on contemporary challenges.
