The challenge of sustainable cities: how can we build resilience into the cities of tomorrow?

With more than half of the population now living in urban areas - a proportion set to rise to over 70% by 2050 - cities occupy a central place in the dynamics of environmental, social and economic transformation. They concentrate the challenges of rapid urbanisation, but also the levers for building a more sober, resilient and equitable future.
Sustainable Cities: Panorama
Faced with unprecedented urban expansion, which is set to double in size over the next three decades, the choices made today will have a lasting impact on the face of tomorrow's cities. In developing countries, where much of the infrastructure still needs to be built, the challenge is crucial: to adopt urban development models now that are compatible with climate imperatives, biodiversity issues and the expectations of local populations.
Educating, caring, transporting, housing, protecting... cities are called upon to fulfil these essential missions while reducing their environmental footprint. This implies a fundamental review of planning practices: better integration of ecosystems in urban planning, preference for sustainable materials, inclusive public spaces and low-carbon urban services.
The sustainable city is not just about ‘green’ infrastructure; it is also about a cultural and heritage project, rooted in the history of the area. Protecting old buildings, enhancing landscapes, encouraging a responsible tourist economy and strengthening access to culture are all aspects of an inclusive and dynamic urbanity. By bringing together citizens, institutions, economic players and civil society, the city becomes a veritable laboratory for transition.
What is a #RDVExpertise?
Les Rendez-vous de l'Expertise is a series of conference-debates based on a format inspired by TV programmes. Each session tackles a major issue in international cooperation through two round tables featuring international experts and practitioners. These discussions - held face-to-face or in duplex from different priority geographical areas - highlight the diversity of players in the sector. Through direct dialogue, the speakers share their analyses, field experiences and perspectives on contemporary challenges.
