Maritime security: GoGIN organises the first crisis communication training

Strengthen the management of crisis communication

The acts of piracy and robbery in the vast maritime area of ​​the Gulf of Guinea are constantly increasing in number and violence. The navy engages in the field against the pirates, the centres as planned by the Architecture of Yaoundé are in the process of full operationalisation, the coastline is equipped with radars and semaphores, institutional and judicial reforms are being put in place, the data networking is being reinforced... Yet, it is important in each of these components to strengthen the management of communication. By improving crisis communication management, decision makers and partners will be able to control the information that will be delivered, and better highlight their activities. Today, this knowledge is still lacking.

In order to meet this need, a training in crisis communication is organised by the Inter-Regional Network for the Gulf of Guinea, GoGIN, from April 9 to 18, in Abidjan on the campus of the Regional Academy of Sciences and Techniques of the Sea (ARSTM), within the Institute of Interregional Maritime Safety (ISMI). This training is accredited by the Interregional Coordination Centre of Yaoundé.

This training offer will cover all the needs of professionals in the sector, including the evolution of new modes of communication and meeting the requirement of versatility teams.

10 days of training to master crisis communication

The authorities, directors of the maritime crises, as well as their deputies, heads of the teams have a growing need to be prepared and trained in the exercise of a communication in the field.

This training will be an asset in the knowledge of media and will offer practical training with three experienced journalists. At the end of these ten days, participants will be able to respond to traditional media, on a television platform or from a crisis management centre, or to manage social media relations and so on, and to avoid an uncontrolled buzz.

The training will convene 17 participants from 5 French-speaking countries (Benin, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Gabon and Togo), crisis managers or high-level managers, who are in charge of communication, all of them, by their functions, are in the front line for their respective States, within national maritime crisis management structures or multinational and regional maritime coordination centres.

On April 18, at the end of an ambitious programme, where European and African professionals will come to share their experience, the training will be concluded by the closing ceremony and graduation.
 

The GoGIN project is funded by the European Union and the Government of Denmark and implemented by Expertise France. The objective of the Inter-Regional Network for the Gulf of Guinea is to strengthen cooperation between 19 coastal countries to better fight crime at sea. GoGIN is implementing joint efforts in terms of planning, coordination, communication and IT infrastructure between state agents and institutions, both at national and regional levels. It is a 4-year program with a budget of € 9.3 million. Its long-term goal is to support peace and stability, as well as to promote human and economic development in West and Central Africa.
