While the One Planet Summit has just closed in Paris, Expertise France is posting an “Africa4Climate” webdocumentary online, which demonstrates the effectiveness of public and community initiatives for the fight against climate change. The Africa4Climate project, which aims to support climate change adaptation and mitigation policies in Gabon, Kenya, Uganda and Benin, is implemented by Expertise France and financed by Agence Française de Développement and the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM).

National, local and community authorities are key actors in the objectives set by the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015. The interactive documentary, in French and English, gives the opportunity to find out about actions initiated by four beneficiaries of the Africa4Climate project.

It takes us to Benin, to the Intermunicipality of the Collines Department, where, between sustainable agricultural practices and renewable energies, this dynamic municipality shows us the pragmatic solutions which it implements on a human scale to adapt to climate change.

In Uganda, the municipality of Kampala, the capital, which is experiencing rapid growth, has become East Africa’s new green city, a pioneer in developing a climate strategy in the region. Public schools supplied by biogas, waste recycling, solar street lighting… The authorities have plenty of imagination when it comes to addressing the challenges of rapid urbanisation and climate change.

In Kenya, the Northern Rangelands Trust organisation has been working for over 13 years on setting up and operating community protected areas. It promotes territorial planning and wildlife conservation to combat desertification and conflicts related to the depletion of resources.

Finally, the Government of Gabon is taking action to implement solutions to preserve its exceptional natural heritage, which is one of Africa’s green lungs.

The webdocumentary is based on accounts of promising initiatives and invites us to share the experiences of the men and women who innovate to adapt development to the local challenges of climate change. It is an invitation to find out more about the climate issue in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Africa4Climate has a budget of EUR 3 million financed by the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM) and Agence Française de Développement (AFD). It was implemented by Expertise France from 2012 to 2017 in four countries: Gabon, Kenya, Uganda, Benin. For 5 years, Africa4Climate assisted the authorities of these 4 countries in the definition and implementation of territorial, sectoral or cross-cutting development strategies, integrating the issues of climate change adaptation and mitigation, by providing them with technical tools to define inclusive public policies, as well as tools for decision-making and stakeholder participation. A number of concrete actions were also conducted, such as the installation of improved stoves in some fifteen public schools in Uganda, the creation of a new community protected area in Kenya, or the dissemination of practices for restoring degraded soil in Benin.
