Support for the timber industry is one of the main components of the Private Sector Development Programme, which benefits from EUR 15 million of European Union financing. On 13 October 2017, Sébastien Mosneron Dupin, Chief Executive Officer of Expertise France, and Dany Abboud, member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Lebanese Industrialists (ALI), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a partnership for the implementation, promotion and coordination of an integrated service platform.

The furniture production sector in the Tripoli region has suffered in structural terms in recent years, in particular due to the Syrian crisis and massive imports of low-cost furniture. Producers in Tripoli are hindered by the fact that they are somewhat disconnected from both the domestic and export markets and their business volume has been drastically reduced. The aim of the programme – and of the integrated platform in particular – is to revitalise this historical know-how of the Tripoli region by optimising the development capacity produced and reconnecting production with markets, while optimising processes for the sourcing of raw materials and production.

A meeting place for all sector stakeholders

For several months, the teams of Expertise France and ALI have been working together to provide the most appropriate solutions to the challenges faced by companies in Tripoli’s furniture sector: the signing of this MoU with ALI and the formalisation of this partnership are a crucial step in building this tool to support the furniture sector.

The platform will be installed in Tripoli and will be a meeting place for all sector stakeholders: designers and architects, suppliers of raw materials and equipment, manufacturers, but also distributors and end clients. The support services offered on the platform will monitor all stages in the furniture development process, from creation to distribution, and including prototyping, pre-production and quality management. This 360° positioning aims to boost Tripoli’s producers and assist them in the challenges they face today in winning back the market.

The Association of Lebanese Industrialists (ALI) was set up in 1942 and is the main national association for manufacturing companies operating in Lebanon. It handles economic and social issues concerning companies and advocates for the implementation of a balanced industrial development policy in all regions in Lebanon. The Association seeks to create and maintain an environment conducive to industrial investments, job creation, growth and development.
